How To Remove A Dent From A Canvas

Dents in canvases can happen if we are not careful how we store our paintings.As any artist knows, it doesn’t take much to put a dent in a canvas.Lean a frame against it, or have the edge of another canvas rest on it during storage and it would seem as though your canvas, or worse, your painting is permanently ruined.But don’t worry, you can remove the dents from your stretched canvas almost instantly, which is ideal if you have acquired a dent in a canvas on the way to a show or art fair.

 

All you need is a fine mist spray bottle to remove the dent.These are sold at art stores for the purpose of hydrating your watercolor palette; they are called Watercolor spray bottles.The one I have is made by Holbein.

Turn your painting over and spray the back of the canvas, on the dented area with the fine mist spray bottle.Do not spray the front or you can harm your painting, especially if it is an unvarnished acrylic painting.This may cause the paint to lift.Once you have sprayed the back of the painting lightly with water, massage the water into the canvas.Since the canvas is quite coarse, it usually will not saturate to the other side.Put the painting somewhere warm to dry, but do not use any direct heat source.Within a minute or two, the dent will smooth out right before your eyes, and you have saved your favorite painting or blank canvas.
